 Media blog 1- first blog task


1) Why did you choose A Level Media Studies?

I chose A level media studies because I have studied it for GCSE’s and I have enjoyed analysing different media products, creating magazine covers and inside pages. After GCSE’s I truly felt that I would be interested to carry on doing media studies as I have developed a passion over the last two years.


2) Did you take GCSE Media Studies (either here at Greenford or a different school)?

Yes, I studied BTEC creative media production at Guru Nanak Sikh Academy.


3) If you answered yes to Q2, what grade did you achieve in GCSE Media? What coursework task did you complete? What would you say your strengths and weaknesses were in GCSE Media?

I achieved a level 2 distinction in my GCSE’s, scoring 113/120. I completed coursework throughout the two years which included analysing different magazine covers and advertisements, comparing and contrasting new and old different films, posters, advertisements and games.


4) What grade do you hope to achieve in A Level Media?

I am hoping to achieve an A* due to my interest in media studies and I hope to do very well in the upcoming two years at Greenford.


5) What are your current thoughts about your next steps after A Levels - university, apprenticeship, work?

My current thoughts about my next steps after A level is maybe going to university.


6) What do you think the biggest MEDIA story of 2023 has been and why?

On 6th May 2023, the Coronation of Charles III and Camilla took place. In my opinion, this is the biggest media story due to Queen Elizabeth ll passing away last year on 8th September 2022; she reigned for 70 years, making her the longest reigning monarch. In my opinion, this was a very significant event on the media platform.


7) What media sources do you use to find out about news and current affairs?

I find news and current affairs on Instagram, Twitter, and on BBC news. Sometimes I find out by listening to the daily news on television.


8) What was the last film you watched?

The last film I watched was The Conjuring 2, as I was re watching all the Conjuring movies. This film is from the horror genre.


9) What is your favourite ever TV series?

My favourite ever TV series is Stranger Things because it is filled with many genres, including teenage life, science fiction, adventure, horror, thriller, conspiracy and deception. I really like this tv series because the plot is so suspenseful and interesting. The creators of this series used the time period of the 1980s and also displays modern days , which would intrigue a lot of the audience to watch this. 


10) How many hours do you spend online in an average day? Is this too little, too much or about right? Why? (If you have an iPhone you can use Screen Time to get an accurate figure of how much you use your phone).

On an average day, I spend up to two to three hours online. In my opinion, this is about right because I use educational apps like checking emails, Duolingo, Quizlet, and Google classroom.

This is a great example of sophisticated media analysis and an indication of the level we want to be writing at by the end of the two-year course. 1) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)? HBO’s Pan Am and Beyoncé’s music video for ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’. 2) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form?
