WWW: I like your answers to the first 10 questions –particularly you are having a positive experience with the subject when studying it at your previous school. It’s lovely to have students return to the subject and wish to study it further. 

 

EBI: Two key areas to improve here: firstly, some of your work is missing or unfinished and it’s important to make sure you are organised and fully completing work. Make sure you post the Genre and Narrative blogs as soon as you can. On a side note, try and develop your exposure to reading newspapers to ensure you are receiving a variety of newsworthy content.

Reflect on your work in A Level Media so far: What is your strongest piece of work? What is your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course?


My strongest piece of work is the semiotics. This is my strongest piece of work because I found this topic intriguing and found a good example of icon, index and symbols. My weakest piece of work is the reception theory blog as I needed time to think about the different readings and how it applies to the advert I chose. I need to revise and develop a better understanding for the different theories and apply that knowledge to exam questions.

Feminist theory Media Magazine reading - two articles on feminism and theory Read  Playing With The Past: Post-feminism and the Media  ( MM40 , page 64 -  our Media Magazine archive is here ). This is a great example of sophisticated media analysis and an indication of the level we want to be writing at by the end of the two-year course. 1) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)? HBO’s Pan Am and Beyoncé’s music video for ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’. 2) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form? Both texts suggest that we are now in a time beyond the need for feminism, that we can now look back and laugh nostalgically at the way women were treated in those periods in our history. 3) Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog. Ideology Part 1: BBC Question Time analysis            Watch this clip from BBC Question Time with Russell Brand and Nigel Farage. The BBC deliberately placed the two against each other and the episode resulted in far more people than usual watching and reacting on social media. 1) What examples of  binary opposition  can you suggest from watching this clip?
