Magazine front cover LR

1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.

2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBIs. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.

Mark out of 15 for Media Language: 9

Estimated A Level coursework grade: C

WWW: This is a satisfactory magazine cover that is clearly recognisable as Dazed. Your planning and evaluation are short (too short and incomplete!). You have a strong image (I like the unusual backdrop placement of the image) but the text both in terms of the words and the layout is an area to develop. I’m sure your coursework next year will be much stronger because of this project.

EBI: There are a few good lessons to take from this production work. Firstly, I think there’s not enough planning or evaluation which truly prevents you from receiving top marks. Secondly, you have the text slightly overlapping your cover model’s hand which is a big thing to avoid when designing magazine covers. Finally, if you were to redo this, I would consider getting your cover model to keep their eyes open instead of closed. Look at the placement and style of the cover lines and cover models on the real covers of Dazed to get an idea of this.

3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.)
  • Satisfactory application of knowledge and understanding of media language, demonstrated by effective selection and combination of straightforward elements to communicate clear meaning throughout the product
4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?
  • Excellent application of knowledge and understanding of media language, demonstrated by the consistently appropriate and effective selection and combination of elements to communicate very clear meanings throughout the products.
  • An excellent cross-media production that constructs very effective narratives and shows deliberate control of connotations and clearly and purposefully constructs points of view that embody values and attitudes.
  • To improve on my magazine cover, I would select an image with the model with opened eyes making eye contact with the camera instead of closed eyes.
5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?
I would recreate the photos in a more accurate manner. I would play around with different mise en scene elements to make the photo look aesthetic and professional. Also, when editing I would try to avoid using similar colours so they don't clash.
